National Gallery of Canada meets in Whitehorse
The National Gallery of Canada (NGC) held its September board meeting and its Annual Public meeting in Whitehorse – the first time north of 60!
National Gallery staff and board members from across Canada had the opportunity to see some great Yukon art, meet members of the local arts community, and experience some of the Yukon’s spectacular scenery. The NGC’s presence in Whitehorse and in other parts of Canada will help it to expand its networks and achieve its goal of becoming a truly national gallery. The Yukon arts community and the NGC were happy to have the opportunity to build greater connections.

Raven Shares the Light – artists’ depictions
2021 Finalist Krystle Silverfox‘s new installation, Raven Shares the Light, pays homage to the story of Raven and the Sun – an important ancestral Yukon First Nations Story. This artwork was made during a residency with STEPS who partnered with the ODD Gallery in Dawson. Krystle got this residency by applying when she saw it on Akimbo, an arts newsletter. Find out more about this interesting 5 part sculpture.
Another Raven themed installation of Krystle’s, Raven lite, will be opening shortly in New York City as part of the show How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful.
Want to hear more about this story? Watch artist Megan (Guna) Jensen tell the story of how Raven brings light to the world in this stunning one minute film which we showed as part of the 2021 Yukon Prize Gala.

Alumni News
2023 Longlisted artist and Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in citizen Jackie Olson will be giving a talk at 6 pm ET on Oct 30 – part of the Paydirt Seminars organized by Struts Gallery
Zoom link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86928140958?pwd=IumkHSDTKn3moFTxdVvfwtZoqIRTgd.1
In her artistic practice Jackie works through processes of reclamation, witnessing and accompanying the regrowth of nature in the wake of miners’ destruction of the surface of the land. She works with willow, which is what first grows back over the machinery and rubble. Watching the way willow grows and working with willow to make her art is a way to learn from nature, and to understand how nature responds and adapts to the invasions and destructions caused by mining.
