Happy Summer

We were delighted to see the artwork of 2023 Yukon Prize Recipient Kaylyn Baker during a recent visit to the National Gallery of Canada. Kaylyn’s beaded purse is featured in a stunning beadwork show, Radical Stitch, which has been touring the country and will be on display in Ottawa until September 30. An enlarged photo of her beaded purse is showcased on the cover of the exhibit’s French catalogue, as well as on a large sign at the entrance of the show.

2021 Finalist Krystle Silverfox co-led a workshop at the Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning that invited community members to learn about wildfires and contribute to a large-scale collaborative art piece on a 10-by-5-foot canvas. The workshop was part of a series of events encouraging Yukon and Northwest Territories residents to share art and poetry after a summer of evacuations.

“There’s this tendency to want to find solutions right away rather than sitting with and feeling our way through what’s happening,” Silverfox said. “I think art can create a space for us to really listen to each other and hear how everybody’s being affected differently.”
